Swim Team
The Woodland Hills Flying Fish have been a treasured Club tradition since 1961. Swimmers from Full or Associate Member households are encouraged to join!
Joining our team means getting to be part of a supportive squad, to represent our club in the South Hills Swim Conference, to enjoy daily exercise, to strengthen your swimming skills, and to have FUN. Our dedicated coaches are Woodland Hills lifeguards who’ve competed on swim teams in high school and/or college.
Participation costs $75 per child (with a family maximum of $125) and that fee covers practices, swim meets, a team t-shirt, a team swim cap, the team party, and all the ribbons and trophies you can earn. For meets, every swimmer must wear either a team suit they’ve purchased (selected by our coaches), or their own jammers/tech/racing suit in some combination of our Club colors (which are red, black, and white). We strongly suggest that swimmers wear racing goggles for practices and meets.
NEW
For great communication, we’re using a team-management app, TeamSnap, to organize our roster, schedule, volunteering opportunities, swimmer availability, and meet placements!
The age groups available are 8 & Under, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, and 15-18. A swimmer’s age-group placement for a season is determined by their age on June 1st of that season.
Practices
Early June through late July
Weekdays from 10:15 to 11:45am
We recommend, and hope, that all swimmers attend all practices. We’re aiming for learning, improving, and bonding. The more you practice, the faster and more confidently you’ll swim - and the stronger your Woodland Hills friendships will become. Our training sessions are great exercise, and they’re fun! We work on starts and strokes (backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle/crawl) and on Fridays, we play games.
Meets
Mid-June through late July
Tuesday & Thursday evenings
South Hills Swim Conference includes our Flying Fish along with teams from Bower Hill Swim Club, Elmhurst Swim Club, Keystone Oaks Aqua Club, and Rose Garden Pool Association. To be meet-eligible, a Woodland Hills team member must be able to swim at least one length of the pool without assistance. Each meet offers a variety of events for swimmers, from individual freestyle sprints to freestyle relays and medley (multi-stroke) relays.
Our swimmers are guaranteed to compete in any of our dual (two-team) meets as long as they’ve indicated to our coaches - with the advance notice required - that they’re available for that meet. Some of our swimmers will be asked to compete at invitational (five-team) meets as well (e.g. 10 & Under, All-Relay, and Underdog).
While we encourage all of our swimmers to give themselves the opportunity to compete, taking part in swim meets is not required for membership on our swim team. If you’re someone who’d prefer to build some confidence and strength before competing, you’re an equally welcome and important part of our team.
“Being on the team makes my kids feel like Woodland Hills really is THEIR place, and they’re proud to represent the club. They love getting to know the lifeguards better, too, and making ‘pool friends’ from other districts.”

Coming in April
We’re grateful to our volunteers for making it all possible! Volunteer opportunities include operating the concession stand at home meets, planning the team party, serving as a timer or judge at home or away meets, and being our starter or announcer at home meets.
We typically host four or five meets each summer. Please note that on these Tuesday or Thursday evenings, both pools close at 4pm so that our lifeguards and other staff members can prepare the facilities, give swimmers some warm-up time, and focus on keeping all competitors safe in the water.
Have a swimmer who’d like to take lessons first? Check out our School of Flying Fish!
And have you heard about our Grown-up Swimming team?
“Thank you, Coaches!!”
