Swim Team
The Woodland Hills Flying Fish have been a treasured Club tradition since 1961. Swimmers from Full or Associate Member households are encouraged to join—no tryouts or experience necessary!
Joining our team means getting to be part of a supportive squad, to represent our club in the South Hills Swim Conference, to enjoy daily exercise, to strengthen your swimming skills, and to have FUN.

Age Groups. 8 & Under, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, and 15-18. A swimmer’s age-group placement for a season is determined by their age on June 1st of that season.
Investment. $75 per swimmer (with a family maximum of $125). That fee covers practices, swim meets, a team t-shirt, a team swim cap, the team party, and all the ribbons and trophies you can earn. We have markers available in the gatehouse so that each swimmer can write their name on the inside of their shirt and their cap.
Swimsuits. Team suits are selected by our coaches and then ordered directly by individuals, via the links provided on this page.
NEW
Communication. We’re using a team-management app, TeamSnap, to organize our roster, schedule, swimmer availability, and meet placements. Parents and Caregivers, please:
Indicate your swimmer’s Availability for the whole season based on what you know now, and then make changes as necessary. If we’re less than four days from a meet, email Emily after indicating your Availability change in TeamSnap.
Select “Maybe” if there’s uncertainty, rather than leaving a date blank.
Recognize that a no-show or last-minute cancellation could force us to "scratch" (not participate in) an event that we'd planned on entering. That could mean a teammate wouldn't get to swim (because any relay squad requires four swimmers).
Our league regulates the number of events that any one swimmer may participate in at a given meet, and not all events carry the same point value, so our coaches are careful and strategic when they create our lineup for each meet.
Have more than one swimmer on our team? Please indicate Availability for each of your swimmers separately, selecting one at a time. In your browser, look for the “Viewing as” dropdown. In the TeamSnap app, tap our team name to reveal the dropdown. TeamSnap Article
Meets
Tuesday, June 16 - Wednesday, July 22
Tuesday & Thursday evenings
Swimwear. When participating in a meet, a swimmer wears either a team suit they’ve ordered directly (selected by our coaches), or their own jammers/tech/racing suit in some combination of our Club colors (which are red, black, and white). Experts generally suggest wearing a size or two down from your usual clothing size, so that you’ll have a tight fit that still allows for mobility. We strongly recommend that swimmers also wear racing goggles for practices and meets.
League. South Hills Swim Conference includes our Flying Fish along with teams from Bower Hill Swim Club, Elmhurst Swim Club, Keystone Oaks Aqua Club, and Rose Garden Pool Association.
Events. The ability to swim at least one length of the pool without assistance is required for a swimmer to be meet-eligible. Each meet offers a variety of events for swimmers, from individual freestyle sprints to freestyle relays and medley (multi-stroke) relays.
Lineups. Two days before any meet, our coaches post tentative lineups in TeamSnap for that meet. Swimmers are guaranteed to compete in any of each season’s four dual (two-team) meets as long as they’ve indicated to our coaches - with the four days’ advance notice required - that they’re available for that meet.
Invitationals. Some of our swimmers will be invited to compete at special five-team meets as well (10 & Under, Relays, Underdog, and Championship). We use data from our practices and meets to determine who gets listed in our lineups for invitational meets. To be eligible for consideration as part of our lineup for the Championship invitational, a swimmer must have competed in at least three of our other meets during that same season.
Guidelines. At meets, our coaches write each swimmer's event number(s) on their forearm. Listen for the Announcer's voice so you'll know when to make sure your swimmer is with their coach and ready to swim. When they're not "on deck" with their coach because an event of theirs is coming up next, swimmers spectate wtih their families to avoid overcrowding the deck.
Ribbons. After every meet, ribbons are given to the swimmers who've come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in an event at that meet.
Competing. While we encourage all of our swimmers to give themselves the opportunity to compete, taking part in swim meets is not required for membership on our swim team. If you’re someone who’d prefer to build some confidence and strength before competing, you’re an equally welcome and important part of our team.
Practices
Monday, June 15 - Wednesday, July 22
Each Weekday from 10:30 to 11:45am
Check-in. Everyone, including Caregivers, checks in at the gatehouse upon arrival.
Parents & Caregivers. Swimmers age 12 and older may attend practices without a Caregiver present, as per Club rules. Swimmers age 15 and older are eligible to serve as Caregivers for younger kids.
Internet Access. Club Wi-Fi is available for use by non-swimming Caregivers during practices. Welcome1959
Attendance. We recommend, and hope, that all swimmers attend all practices. We’re aiming for learning, improving, and bonding. The more you practice, the faster and more confidently you’ll swim - and the stronger your Woodland Hills friendships will become. Our training sessions are great exercise, and they’re fun! We work on starts and strokes (backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle/crawl).
Fun Fridays. We play games and enjoy other activities as a team on Fridays. At our practices on June 12th and 19th, for example, we'll be set up for swimmers to tie-dye their team shirts in preparation for our annual relay meet.
“Being on the team makes my kids feel like Woodland Hills really is THEIR place, and they’re proud to represent the club. They love getting to know the lifeguards better, too, and making ‘pool friends’ from other districts.”
We’re grateful to our volunteers for making it all possible! Volunteer opportunities include roles like operating the concessions stand at home meets, planning the team party, serving as a timer or judge at home or away meets, and being our starter or announcer at home meets.
We typically host 3-5 meets each summer. Please note that on these Tuesday or Thursday evenings, both pools close at 4pm so that our lifeguards and other staff members can prepare the facilities, give swimmers some warm-up time, and focus on keeping all competitors safe in the water.
While we encourage all of our swimmers to give themselves the opportunity to compete, taking part in swim meets is not required for membership on our swim team. If you’re someone who’d prefer to build some confidence and strength before competing, you’re an equally welcome and important part of our team.
Our dedicated coaches are Woodland Hills lifeguards who’ve competed on swim teams in high school and/or college. They enjoy sharing what they know, and love, about swimming.
